Attribution frameworks were designed for simpler marketing environments. When customer journeys were shorter, channels were fewer, and data signals were clearer, assigning credit to touchpoints was relatively practical. That environment no longer exists.

Incrementality does not require perfect visibility into every interaction. It focuses on observable change. What happens when spend is increased, reduced, or paused in a given context. How outcomes differ across comparable markets, time periods, or customer segments.
This approach is less elegant than algorithmic attribution, but it is often more informative for decision-making.
Incrementality acknowledges overlap rather than trying to eliminate it. It accepts that multiple channels may influence the same outcome, and that the relevant question is not ownership but contribution.
Measuring Incrementality Without Excessive Complexity
Incrementality is often perceived as analytically complex. In practice, the most effective approaches are relatively simple.
Organizations that succeed tend to test at the level at which decisions are made. Market-level experiments are used where budgets are allocated by region. Channel-level tests are applied where investment decisions are centralized. Granularity is aligned to governance, not technical capability.
Precision is treated as directional rather than absolute. The objective is to understand relative contribution well enough to inform trade-offs, not to achieve statistical perfection.
Importantly, incrementality measurement is embedded into planning cycles rather than treated as a one-time validation exercise. Over time, this creates a more reliable understanding of how marketing investment behaves under different conditions.
Dealing with Conflicting Performance Narratives
